Five-Layer Security Ring for Putin’s India Visit
Ahead of Vladimir Putin’s visit to India on December 4–5, authorities in Delhi have implemented an extensive security protocol described as a “five-layer security ring.” The arrangement brings together elite personnel from both Russia and India, advanced surveillance technology, and extensive route and venue sanitisation to safeguard the Russian President throughout his stay.
What the Security Setup Includes
The outermost layers are managed by domestic security units — Delhi Police and National Security Guard (NSG) — responsible for crowd control, perimeter security and monitoring public spaces along the planned routes. For inner layers, officers from Russia’s presidential security detail will collaborate with India’s elite units, including Special Protection Group (SPG), whenever Putin is accompanied by Narendra Modi.
The security apparatus will also rely heavily on technology — drones, electronic jammers, AI-enabled monitoring and facial-recognition systems. Several sniper teams have reportedly been deployed at strategic vantage points to ensure constant protection during convoy movements. All locations on the itinerary — from hotels to official venues — have been pre-inspected and secured.
Why the Tight Security
Putin’s visit comes at a period of heightened global and regional tensions, making security the foremost priority. The planned itinerary includes high-profile events, meetings, ceremonial functions and public appearances in Delhi, which demand maximum vigilance. Coordinated surveillance and rapid-response capability aim to preclude any threats to the visiting head of state.
Impact on the Capital
Delhi has effectively gone under lockdown for the duration of the visit. Public advisories warn of traffic restrictions, limited access to some zones, and disruptions in usual movement patterns. The security sweep covers not only the announced venues but also potential impromptu stops, reflecting the breadth of precaution.
Diplomatic Significance
The elaborate security arrangement underscores the scale and importance of the diplomatic engagement between India and Russia. As both sides are expected to discuss defence, energy and strategic cooperation, ensuring a safe environment for the talks is critical. The multi-layered security ring serves not only as protection for a visiting dignitary but as a symbol of India’s commitment to hosting international leaders under the highest possible standards.
