First Made-in-India Chip to Launch by Year-End

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s first fully made-in-India semiconductor chip will be launched by the end of 2025. Speaking from the Red Fort, he said this milestone will mark a turning point in India’s technological self-reliance and global competitiveness.

Missed Opportunities in the Past

Modi noted that India had missed earlier chances in semiconductor production, particularly during the eras of 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies. He emphasized that the country is now working in “mission mode” to avoid repeating those mistakes and to position itself at the forefront of next-generation technologies.

Ongoing Factory Development

Six semiconductor manufacturing units are currently under construction across the country, while four more projects have already been approved. These facilities are part of India’s larger plan to build a strong domestic ecosystem for chip production.

Wider Semiconductor Push

The government’s Semicon India Programme, with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore, is providing up to 50% fiscal support for fabrication plants, display units, and related projects. India has also signed collaboration agreements with partners in the United States, European Union, Japan, and Singapore to strengthen supply chains.

Role of Industry and Academia

India’s semiconductor ambitions are being supported by research institutions and private industry. IIT-Madras and ISRO have already developed indigenous processors for space applications, while Tata is setting up a ₹27,000 crore semiconductor facility in Assam. In addition, the HCL-Foxconn joint venture is expected to begin production by 2027, boosting the domestic capacity further.
