FIRs Filed Over Social Media Posts Targeting CJI Gavai
Punjab Police have filed multiple FIRs across several districts after receiving complaints about abusive and casteist social media posts aimed at Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai. The action follows the recent incident where advocate Rakesh Kishore attempted to hurl a shoe at the CJI inside the Supreme Court.
Nature of Allegations
According to officials, the posts contained derogatory remarks against a high constitutional authority, caste-based insults, and messages intended to incite unrest. Police say the online content was aimed at disturbing public order and exploiting caste sentiments.
Legal Action Taken
The FIRs invoke provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to enmity, insult, and public mischief.
Scope of Investigation
More than 100 social media accounts are under police scrutiny. The state’s Cyber Cell is coordinating with platforms to identify the accused and remove objectionable content. Authorities confirmed that further action will be taken once the investigation is complete.
