Fire Incident at Takshshila Co-operative Housing Society
A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of March 24 at the Takshshila Co-operative Housing Society, a 13-storey residential building located near Vidyavihar railway station in Mumbai. The incident occurred around 4:35 a.m., causing significant damage to property and resulting in one fatality and one injury.
Casualties and Injuries Reported
Two security guards were injured in the fire. Uday Gangan, 43, succumbed to his injuries after suffering severe burns and was declared dead upon arrival at Rajawadi Hospital. The second guard, 52-year-old Sabhajit Yadav, sustained burns on 25% to 30% of his body and is currently receiving treatment. Authorities have reported his condition as stable.
Flats and Property Damaged
The fire primarily affected the first and second floors of the building, causing destruction to at least five flats. Electrical wiring, air conditioning units, household goods, wooden furniture, and clothing were among the items damaged. Fire also spread to the wooden paneling, shoe racks, and lobby furniture on both floors, raising concerns over building safety compliance and fire preparedness.
Swift Emergency Response
Firefighters arrived promptly at the scene and successfully rescued between 15 and 20 residents who were trapped inside the building. The fire was categorized as a “level-two” emergency and was brought under control by 7:33 a.m. Emergency services worked efficiently to prevent the flames from spreading to higher floors, containing the situation within a few hours.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest that the blaze may have originated from an electrical fault, though confirmation is pending. Safety officials have reiterated the importance of routine checks on electrical systems, fire exits, and emergency response equipment in residential complexes.
