Father of Karur Stampede Victim Seeks CBI Probe in SC
The father of a 13-year-old boy who lost his life in the Karur rally stampede has approached the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragedy. The incident, which took place on September 27 during a public rally of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), claimed 41 lives and left many others injured.
Victim Family’s Plea
The petitioner argued that the investigation conducted so far by state agencies is inadequate and biased. He urged the court to hand over the case to the CBI to ensure impartiality, pointing out that several questions remain unanswered regarding crowd management, safety arrangements, and alleged administrative lapses.
Earlier High Court Proceedings
The Madras High Court had earlier declined to order a CBI investigation and directed petitioners to move its Madurai bench. The father, however, escalated the matter directly to the Supreme Court, stressing that only an independent central agency could bring justice to the victims’ families.
TVK’s Separate Petition
Meanwhile, TVK has also filed a plea in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by state police officers. The party argued that the SIT lacks neutrality and unfairly prejudices TVK.
Supreme Court Hearing
The apex court has listed both matters for hearing on October 10, when it will consider whether the investigation should remain with the SIT or be handed over to the CBI. For the grieving families, particularly the father of the 13-year-old victim, the case represents a critical fight for justice and accountability.
