Expert Suggests Russia Used North Korean Missile in Kyiv Strike
On January 18, 2025, a missile strike on Kyiv resulted in the deaths of three individuals. Aviation analyst Kostyantyn Kryvolap has suggested that the missile used was a North Korean KN-15, also known as Pukguksong-2. This intermediate-range ballistic missile has a range between 1,200 to 2,000 kilometers and can reach speeds up to Mach 5. The missile’s high-altitude trajectory and speed pose significant challenges for existing air defense systems.
Kryvolap noted that Ukraine’s current radar capabilities are limited to detecting threats within a 500-kilometer range. The KN-15’s extended range allows it to be launched from positions beyond this detection zone, resulting in delayed air raid alerts and limited interception opportunities. To effectively counter such threats, Kryvolap emphasized the need for advanced air defense systems, such as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) or Aegis missile defense systems, which Ukraine currently lacks.
Reports from the previous year indicated that North Korea might have supplied Russia with KN-15 missile systems.
