EU to Propose Faster Russian Energy Phase-Out

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU will put forward a proposal to speed up the reduction of Russian fossil fuel imports. The move comes after a call with U.S. President Donald Trump focused on increasing economic pressure on Russia.

Original vs. New Timelines

The EU had earlier planned to end imports of Russian oil and gas by January 1, 2028. Under the proposed plan, that deadline could be brought forward.

Sanctions & Joint Coordination

Von der Leyen also mentioned the upcoming 19th sanctions package, which will include new measures targeting the energy sector, banks, and crypto usage linked to sanction evasion. Coordination with the U.S. is being emphasized.

Challenges Ahead

Some EU member states have expressed concern about how the faster phase-out will impact energy prices, supply security, and contract obligations. Legal and logistical issues remain unresolved as the proposal progresses.
