EU Reaches Deal to End Russian Gas Imports by 2027
The European Union has finalised a binding agreement to completely phase out Russian natural gas imports by the end of 2027. The decision marks one of the bloc’s most significant energy shifts since the start of the Ukraine war, aiming to reduce dependence on Moscow and strengthen long-term energy security.
How the Phase-Out Will Work
The agreement covers both pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Under the plan, Russian LNG will be banned from the end of 2026, while pipeline gas imports must stop by autumn 2027. Short-term contracts will be allowed to wind down through mid-2026, while long-term contracts will be phased out within the new deadlines.
Why the EU Took This Step
The move is part of the EU’s broader REPowerEU strategy, introduced after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. European leaders say ending reliance on Russian gas is essential for energy independence and preventing Moscow from using energy supplies as political leverage.
