EU Leaders Show Strong Support for Ukraine
European Union leaders convened in Brussels and reaffirmed their support for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as the war with Russia continues. The summit endorsed a plan to provide about €140 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine over the next two years, using frozen Russian assets as a funding base.
Zelenskiy Urges Swift Action
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed the summit and called on EU leaders to move quickly, stressing that the aid would help secure air defence systems and frontline resources urgently needed to protect civilians and soldiers.
Debate Over Legal and Financial Risks
While most EU members backed the proposal, Belgium voiced caution as it holds the bulk of frozen Russian funds. Belgian leaders sought stronger safeguards to avoid legal and financial complications before final implementation.
Sanctions Package Approved
Alongside the funding plan, EU leaders agreed on a new sanctions package against Russia. This includes a phased ban on Russian liquefied natural gas imports starting in 2027, aimed at reducing energy dependence on Moscow.
