EU Lawmakers Pause US Trade Deal Talks

European lawmakers have suspended work on a proposed trade agreement with the United States amid rising tensions linked to Greenland and U.S. tariff threats. Members of the European Parliament said the current political environment is not conducive to advancing the deal.

Reason for the Suspension

The move follows sharp differences between the U.S. and European leaders over Greenland, with Washington signalling possible tariff action as part of the dispute. EU lawmakers said such pressure tactics undermine trust and make it difficult to proceed with trade cooperation.

Parliament’s Stand

The European Parliament has delayed steps needed to move the agreement forward, including preparatory discussions and timelines for approval. Lawmakers stressed that trade agreements require stable political relations and mutual respect, which they said are currently lacking.

Impact on Transatlantic Relations

The pause adds to growing strain in transatlantic relations, already affected by disagreements over trade policy and geopolitical issues. EU officials indicated that progress on the deal will depend on an improvement in political dialogue and a reduction in tensions.
