EU, Europe Back Greenland Against US Claims

European Union and European leaders have reaffirmed their support for Greenland and Denmark following renewed statements from the United States about gaining influence over the strategic Arctic territory. Leaders from major European countries including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland and Spain said that Greenland’s future can only be decided by its own people and the Government of Denmark. They emphasised that Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark and not subject to external control.

Sovereignty and International Law Emphasised

European officials stressed respect for sovereignty and international law amid comments by US officials about acquiring Greenland, with some US rhetoric raising concerns about possible pressure or acquisition proposals. European leaders made clear that any change in control over Greenland must be determined democratically by Greenlanders and Denmark, not by outside powers.

Denmark’s government has rejected suggestions of transferring control or ownership of Greenland and reiterated that the territory will remain under Danish sovereignty with full respect for the rights of its residents.

Greenland and NATO Context

Greenland’s Prime Minister thanked European allies for their backing and called for continued dialogue rooted in international law and mutual respect. European statements also highlighted the importance of collective security and cooperation in the Arctic, given Greenland’s strategic location and the presence of a long-standing US military base there. The reaffirmation of support reflects broader concerns about geopolitical tensions in the region and the need to uphold alliance unity.
