England Recall Dawson as Bashir Ruled Out of 4th Test
England have brought back 35-year-old all-rounder Liam Dawson into their Test squad ahead of the fourth match against India at Old Trafford, starting July 23. The decision comes after young spinner Shoaib Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a fractured finger.
Bashir Suffers Injury at Lord’s
Bashir sustained the injury while trying to take a return catch during India’s first innings in the third Test at Lord’s. Although visibly in pain, he continued bowling and even claimed the final wicket of the match—dismissing Mohammed Siraj—to seal a thrilling 22-run win for England. With that result, England took a 2–1 lead in the five-match series. Post-match scans confirmed a fracture to his left little finger, and he is now scheduled for surgery.
Dawson Returns After Eight-Year Gap
Liam Dawson’s last appearance in Test cricket was in 2017 against South Africa. Known for his consistent all-round performances in county cricket, Dawson has taken over 370 first-class wickets and has maintained a batting average above 35. He was named PCA Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024 and recently featured in England’s T20 series against the West Indies.
The selectors considered his recent form and experience, opting to bring him back into the squad ahead of other spin options. Dawson’s inclusion adds both spin depth and batting strength to the lower order.
Squad Adjustments Before Manchester Test
In addition to Bashir’s exit, England released fast bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton to participate in County Championship matches. The pace attack for the fourth Test is expected to feature Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Brydon Carse, with Dawson providing spin and all-round support.
The fourth Test is critical for India, who must win to keep the series alive. England, leading 2–1, will look to seal the series at Old Trafford.
