England Advised Caution Over Jofra Archer’s Test Return
As England prepares for the second Test against India at Edgbaston beginning July 2, a key debate has emerged around the inclusion of pacer Jofra Archer. The fast bowler, who recently returned to red-ball cricket after a four-year injury layoff, has been added to the squad but faces strong calls from former cricketers and coaches to be handled with extreme care.
Archer, who bowled 18 overs in a County Championship match for Sussex and took 1 for 32, showed promising signs of rhythm and control. However, cricketing voices are urging restraint. Former England captain Michael Vaughan warned against rushing Archer back into Test match intensity, stating that the demands of a five-day match cannot be equated to county-level bowling.
Adding to that, Sussex bowling coach Paul Farbrace, who has closely monitored Archer’s recovery, echoed similar concerns. While impressed by the speed and sharpness of his bowling, Farbrace emphasized that England already has a winning combination from the Headingley Test and suggested the third Test might be a more suitable target for Archer’s return. He highlighted the risks of re-injury, which could jeopardize Archer’s long-term availability.
Jofra Archer’s Fitness Still Under Watch
While the Edgbaston pitch may tempt selectors to unleash Archer’s raw pace, experts underline that match fitness, not just physical fitness, is essential. Archer’s workload management remains critical, especially considering England’s broader Test plans and the need for a durable pace battery over the long season.
The current squad includes several in-form seamers who played pivotal roles in England’s thrilling win in the first Test. Tampering with that balance might be unnecessary at this stage, particularly when Archer is still regaining his red-ball rhythm.
Third Test a More Viable Option
Many believe the third Test at Lord’s would be a more logical return point for Archer, giving him more time to condition his body to the demands of long spells. Until then, continued appearances in county cricket would allow him to ease back into the format without the high-pressure burden of a major international clash.
