Encounter Breaks Out in Kulgam’s Akhal Forest Area

Security forces launched a joint anti-militancy operation in the Akhal forest region of Kulgam district, resulting in the death of one militant. The encounter began late Friday evening and continued into Saturday, with operations still underway.

Intelligence Leads to Search Operation

Based on credible inputs, the Indian Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) initiated a cordon-and-search operation in the forested zone of Akhal. As the forces closed in, they came under fire from militants, triggering an armed encounter.

One Militant Neutralised, Search Ongoing

Officials confirmed that one militant was killed during the gunfight. The identity and affiliation of the militant have not yet been officially released. Security personnel continue to comb the dense forest area to locate any remaining threats.

Reinforcements Deployed in the Area

Additional troops were rushed to strengthen the perimeter and prevent any escape attempts. Drones and night-vision surveillance systems were also deployed to assist in the high-risk terrain. The area remains sealed off, and civilians have been advised to avoid the vicinity until operations are concluded.

Region on Alert Amid Spike in Activity

Kulgam district has witnessed increased militant activity in recent months, prompting a series of intensified counter-insurgency operations. The region remains sensitive due to its geography and historical pattern of insurgent infiltration.

Civilian Movement Restricted Temporarily

Authorities have restricted civilian movement near the operation site as a precaution. Essential services and public transport in nearby villages have been temporarily suspended to ensure safety. Local residents have been asked to stay indoors and cooperate with law enforcement.
