ED Flags Cash-for-Jobs Scam in Tamil Nadu

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has written to the Tamil Nadu Police seeking a probe into an alleged cash-for-jobs scheme within the state’s Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department (MAWS). The letter says bribes of ₹25 lakh to ₹35 lakh per post were collected by powerful political operatives to rig the selection process for 2,538 posts in the department. The full dossier names over 150 candidates who benefited.

Allegations and Scope

According to the ED’s communication under Section 66(2) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the appointments were made in August 2025, after exams conducted in early 2024. Around 1.12 lakh candidates had applied. The agency also flagged possible collusion between key officials of Anna University (which conducted the exams) and recruitment intermediaries. The MAWS secretary stated he was unaware of the ED’s letter and maintained that the process was conducted properly.

Political and Legal Implications

The allegations have stirred political tensions in the state, with opposition parties demanding an independent investigation and political accountability. The ED’s involvement highlights potential money-laundering links behind the recruitment irregularities. The Tamil Nadu Police now faces instructions to initiate investigation and may summon officials, candidates and other stakeholders for questioning.
