Economist Warns Dubai At Risk In Iran War
A prominent American economist has warned that Dubai and Abu Dhabi could face direct danger if the United Arab Emirates becomes more deeply involved in the Iran conflict. The remarks came as tensions across West Asia remained high and concerns continued to grow over the vulnerability of major Gulf cities and infrastructure in the event of a wider war.
Dubai Warning Raised Amid Iran Conflict
Economist Jeffrey Sachs said the UAE would be taking a major risk by entering the conflict, arguing that cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi are built as global business and tourism centres rather than hardened military zones. He suggested that deeper military alignment could expose these cities to retaliatory attacks and undermine the very model on which they have built their global appeal.
UAE Alignment With US And Israel Questioned
Sachs also criticised the UAE’s strategic alignment with the United States and Israel, saying Gulf states had placed too much confidence in American military protection. He argued that such dependence could prove dangerous in a rapidly escalating regional conflict, especially if local military bases are used in operations against Iran. The remarks reflect growing debate over whether Gulf partnerships are increasing security or drawing the region deeper into confrontation.
Iran Tensions Put Gulf Security In Focus
The warning comes against the backdrop of sharper rhetoric from Tehran, which has already cautioned regional countries against allowing their territory or military facilities to be used for attacks on Iran. This has intensified concerns that any broader participation by Gulf states could make key urban and economic centres potential targets. As the war continues to widen, the security of commercial hubs like Dubai is becoming an increasingly important regional concern.
