ECI Admits SIR Revision Needs More Time, Says Congress

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has acknowledged that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls cannot be completed under the previously planned tight schedule, a position echoed by opposition Indian National Congress (INC).

SIR Schedule Revised for Accuracy

In a revised notification, the ECI extended the deadline for enumeration and preparation of draft electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories. The enumeration period has been updated, draft rolls will be published on 16 December 2025, and final voter lists are slated for publication by 14 February 2026.

Extension to Avoid Hasty Errors

The extension comes as Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) and electoral staff expressed that completing door-to-door verification, handling claims and objections, and data verification under the original timeframe risked compromising the accuracy of the voter list.

Congress Raises Concerns Over Process

The Congress welcomed the revision, arguing that the extension was necessary to prevent errors, omissions and wrongful deletions. Party leaders emphasized that ensuring every eligible citizen is registered — and preventing disenfranchisement — requires a thorough, unhurried approach.
