EC Warns Against Sharing Polling Station Videos: Voter Privacy at Risk
The Election Commission of India has raised a red flag over the growing trend of recording and sharing video footage from inside polling stations, warning that such actions pose a serious threat to voter privacy and could lead to legal consequences. The advisory comes amid rising incidents of unauthorized camera use during voting across multiple constituencies.

Reports have emerged of individuals using mobile phones to capture video footage inside polling booths, including near or inside voting compartments. The Commission stated that such behavior violates the principle of secret ballot and infringes on the personal freedom of voters. These acts, even if unintended, can intimidate voters or expose their electoral choices, eroding the very foundation of democratic confidentiality.
EC Issues Strict Warning
Officials confirmed that under existing election laws, including provisions in the Representation of the People Act, unauthorized filming or sharing of polling activity is punishable by law. The EC has instructed its field officers to monitor polling stations closely and prevent any form of recording within the restricted areas. Security personnel have also been directed to take immediate action against violators.
