EC Ready to Rectify Errors in Bihar Voter List Revision
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has assured the Supreme Court that any mistakes found in the draft electoral rolls prepared for Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will be corrected before the final list is released later this year.
No Removal Without Notice
The ECI stated that no voter’s name will be deleted without proper notice, an opportunity to respond, and a clear explanation. This is intended to safeguard voter rights and ensure transparency in the process.
Verification Rules Under Scrutiny
The Supreme Court stressed that the revision exercise must focus on including eligible voters rather than excluding them. It also cautioned against rejecting commonly used documents such as Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration cards as valid proof of identity.
Aadhaar Not Conclusive Proof
The court agreed with the ECI’s stance that Aadhaar cannot be treated as conclusive proof of citizenship and that additional documentation can be required where necessary.
High Political Stakes
Concerns over possible voter exclusion have heightened political tensions in Bihar, with opposition parties warning that large numbers of eligible voters—particularly from marginalized communities—could be left out. Allegations include procedural lapses and deliberate suppression.
Legal Oversight and Final Roll
The Supreme Court is monitoring the process and has warned that the revision could be struck down if major violations are found. The final voter list is scheduled to be published by the end of September.
