EC Extends SIR Deadline for Six States and One UT

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in six states and one Union Territory. The extension applies to Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Voters in these regions will now have additional time to update or verify their details on the electoral rolls.

No Extension for West Bengal

The ECI did not extend the SIR deadline for West Bengal, keeping the original schedule unchanged. The state has been engaged in political back-and-forth over the revision process, with parties raising concerns about its implementation and possible impact on voter inclusion.

Why the Extension Was Given

Election officials from the states requested more time, stating that the extension would help ensure a more accurate and complete voter list. The Commission agreed, noting that the revision exercise must reflect verified and updated voter information ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

What the SIR Covers

The Special Intensive Revision process involves identifying duplicate entries, adding new eligible voters and correcting existing voter records. The nationwide SIR drive began in late October and is an important step before final electoral rolls are published.

Next Steps in Revision Process

After the revised timelines, authorities will publish updated draft rolls for public review. Claims and objections will be processed before the final rolls are prepared. Officials emphasised that the goal is to strengthen voter accuracy, not restrict any legitimate voter’s participation.
