Earthquake of Magnitude 4.7 Hits Baramulla
An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.7 struck the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning, according to the Indian seismic monitoring agency. The tremor was felt in several parts of the Kashmir Valley, but there were no reports of major damage or casualties.
Location and Depth
The quake’s epicentre was near Baramulla town, with a depth of around 10 km, which is considered shallow. Residents reported feeling shaking for a few seconds, prompting people to come out of buildings as a precaution. Local authorities said that early assessments did not indicate any structural harm to homes or critical infrastructure.
Response and Safety
District officials said they were conducting ground checks in affected areas and would report any emerging issues. People in towns across the valley responded with caution, but there were no immediate reports of injuries. Seismic experts noted that tremors of this magnitude are common in the Himalayan region, which lies in an earthquake-prone zone.
The administration advised residents to stay calm and follow safety measures like standing in open areas away from tall structures if further tremors occur.
