Earthquake Kills Six In Bangladesh, Tremors Felt In Kolkata
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday morning, killing six people and injuring several others. The tremor, centred near Narsingdi district close to Dhaka, caused buildings to shake across the capital and sent residents rushing outdoors in panic.
Casualties And Reported Damage
Officials confirmed that six people died in separate incidents linked to collapsing structures and falling debris. Multiple others suffered injuries as balconies, railings and loose building material gave way during the shaking. Emergency services are assessing the extent of structural damage in affected areas.
Tremors Felt Across Eastern India
The earthquake was strong enough to be felt across parts of eastern India, including Kolkata and nearby districts of West Bengal. Offices and residential buildings were briefly evacuated as a precaution. No casualties or significant damage were reported in India.
Seismic Details And Safety Advisory
Preliminary readings indicated that the quake was relatively shallow, increasing its impact on surface-level structures. Authorities have warned residents to avoid damaged buildings and remain cautious due to the possibility of aftershocks. Engineers and disaster response teams are surveying older structures to determine safety risks.
Government Response
Bangladesh’s disaster management authorities have initiated emergency protocols and deployed assessment teams to densely populated zones. The government said the incident highlights the need for stronger enforcement of building codes, especially in fast-growing urban centres like Dhaka.
