Earthquake in Tajikistan Felt in Kashmir

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 in magnitude struck Tajikistan early on Friday, with tremors felt in parts of Kashmir and surrounding regions. The seismic event occurred in the early hours of the morning, and residents reported feeling shaking in several areas of the valley.

Details of the Quake

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of around 110 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface. Its epicentre was located in Tajikistan, in a seismically active region of Central Asia where tectonic plates interact. The event triggered perceptible tremors across neighbouring regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, where early-morning activity stirred many residents.

No Immediate Casualties or Damage

Authorities reported that there were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries, or significant damage to property following the quake. Local officials said that the depth of the earthquake helped reduce the intensity of shaking experienced at ground level and limited its impact on infrastructure.

Reaction in Kashmir

Residents in urban and rural parts of Kashmir said they felt the ground tremble for a few seconds. Some people woke up and felt light shaking in their homes, prompting brief concern but no reported panic or injuries.

Seismic Activity Context

The region around Tajikistan and neighbouring Afghanistan lies in an area prone to seismic activity due to the collision of tectonic plates. Earthquakes of moderate magnitude have regularly occurred here, occasionally causing tremors far from the epicentre.
