Earthquake in Afghanistan Sends Tremors Across Delhi-NCR
A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Saturday afternoon, causing tremors across parts of northern India. The quake occurred around 12:17 PM IST and was strongly felt in Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana. People in high-rise buildings experienced swaying objects and briefly evacuated as a precaution.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the Hindu Kush mountain range, a region known for frequent seismic activity due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Its depth and location contributed to the wide reach of tremors, though the impact in India remained limited to brief shaking.
Tremors Felt Across Delhi and Surrounding Areas
Residents across Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad reported experiencing tremors that lasted a few seconds. In many buildings, ceiling fans and light fixtures visibly shook. Offices and homes were temporarily vacated by alarmed occupants, although there was no panic. The Delhi Police and disaster response teams confirmed that no emergency calls or reports of damage were received.
Jammu and Kashmir also reported noticeable tremors, but authorities confirmed no loss of life or property. Emergency protocols were briefly activated, and inspections were carried out in sensitive zones to ensure structural safety.
Officials Urge Preparedness Amid No Damage Reports
While no damage or injuries have been reported, the tremor serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of the northern belt to seismic events. Experts have reiterated the importance of earthquake-resistant infrastructure, particularly in the densely populated National Capital Region.
Authorities have also urged residents to stay alert but avoid panic. No aftershocks were recorded after the initial quake, and normal activity resumed shortly. Citizens have been encouraged to familiarize themselves with safety guidelines issued by disaster management authorities in the event of future quakes.
