EAM S. Jaishankar Raises Pro-Khalistan Concerns in UK
During his recent visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar focused on deepening bilateral ties and addressing India’s security concerns. A major point of discussion was the pro-Khalistan activities in the UK, an issue that has been a significant concern for India.
Addressing Pro-Khalistan Extremism
Jaishankar met with the UK’s Home Secretary to discuss extremism and related security matters. He reiterated India’s stance on tackling separatist elements that operate from British soil and engage in anti-India campaigns. These groups, particularly those linked to the Khalistan movement, have been active in organizing protests and events that India perceives as threats to its sovereignty. He stressed the need for a stronger crackdown on such activities to prevent further radicalization.
India-UK Free Trade Agreement Progress
Beyond security discussions, Jaishankar also focused on strengthening economic ties between the two nations. He met with trade officials to assess the progress of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which both sides aim to finalize soon. The negotiations have been ongoing, with both countries keen on ensuring a mutually beneficial deal that enhances trade and investment opportunities. Strengthening economic cooperation remains a key priority in fostering a long-term strategic partnership.
Strengthening Diplomatic Presence
In a significant move, the UK announced the establishment of two new Indian consulates in Belfast and Manchester. This expansion is expected to further support the Indian diaspora in the UK and boost trade relations, which already amount to billions annually. Officials see this as a step towards strengthening diplomatic and economic engagement between the two nations.
Expanding Cooperation in Key Sectors
The discussions also touched upon expanding collaboration in areas such as climate action, education, healthcare, research, and technological innovation. Both countries are looking at new ways to cooperate on global challenges and advance shared interests in multiple sectors.
Jaishankar’s visit emphasized India’s commitment to fostering stronger ties with the UK while ensuring that security concerns, particularly regarding extremism, are addressed. The ongoing diplomatic efforts indicate a broader strategy to reinforce political, economic, and security partnerships between the two nations in the coming years.
