EAM Jaishankar Slams Trump’s 50% Tariff as ‘Funny’
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum in Delhi, he said it was “funny” for a pro-business government to accuse others of doing trade. Jaishankar added that the U.S. and Europe themselves continue to engage in robust trade, making such accusations misplaced.
India’s Stand on Energy Imports
Jaishankar defended India’s energy import policy, particularly its purchase of Russian crude oil. He said India’s choices are based on national interest and economic needs, not on pleasing or provoking other nations. According to him, energy security remains vital for India’s growth and stability, and purchasing decisions are guided by market affordability.
Ongoing Trade Negotiations
Despite the tariff dispute, Jaishankar confirmed that trade talks between India and the U.S. are still continuing. He noted that India has clear “red lines” in negotiations, especially regarding the protection of farmers and small businesses. The additional 25% U.S. tariffs scheduled to take effect on August 27, which will raise the total duty to 50%, were described as a challenge but not an end to dialogue.
India’s Broader Message
The minister emphasised that India will not compromise on core national interests under external pressure. He reiterated that India’s global partnerships are built on mutual respect and equality, and any trade or energy decision must serve the country’s long-term development goals.
