EAM Jaishankar Remarks Amid Visa Fee Row
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said that in today’s changing world, nations must embrace a global workforce. He made the remark during a session on “Aid, Trade, and Technology” held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Context: H-1B Visa Fee Increase
His comments came in response to the U.S. imposing a USD 100,000 fee for new H-1B visas, a move that affects many Indian professionals. The hike has triggered debate about access, talent mobility, and global labour markets. Jaishankar argued that many countries simply do not have the demographic capacity to meet labour demands internally.
Call For New Global Model
Jaishankar called for a more modern, efficient model of workforce distribution—one that allows work to be located globally. He said this model should be acceptable and fair, not coercive or exclusionary.
Challenges Ahead
Implementing a global workforce system involves complex issues—visa rules, taxation, remote working norms, employment rights, and cybersecurity. For many countries, structural reforms will be needed to adapt. Unless addressed carefully, countries may face brain drain, inequity, or political backlash.
