Drone Strikes Kill One in Ethiopia’s Tigray
At least one person was killed and another injured in drone strikes in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region on January 31, according to local officials. The strikes hit two separate vehicles in different locations, around 20 kilometres apart, causing casualties and damage.
Situation Remains Unclear
Officials said the exact target of the drone strikes is not yet clear. Local sources indicated that the vehicles were travelling through the region when they were struck. There has been no official confirmation from Ethiopia’s federal authorities on who carried out the strikes or the intended targets.
Rising Security Concerns
The incident has raised fresh concerns about security in Tigray, which has seen renewed tensions despite a peace agreement that ended a two-year conflict in late 2022. Aid agencies operating in the region said instability could affect humanitarian operations and civilian movement.
Background of Conflict
Tigray was the centre of a brutal war between federal forces and regional fighters that caused widespread destruction and displacement. Recent incidents have heightened fears of a return to sustained violence in the region.
