DRDO’s IADWS Advances Mission Sudarshan Chakra
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the first flight trials of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha. The trial is a key step in India’s Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a nationwide defence initiative announced earlier this month.
Multi-Layered Defence Design
The IADWS combines three indigenous systems: Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM), Very Short Range Air Defence Missiles (VSHORADS), and Directed Energy Weapons (DEW). Together, they create a layered shield capable of tackling multiple types of aerial threats, from drones to guided missiles.
Simultaneous Target Engagement
In the demonstration, the system intercepted and destroyed three aerial targets—two high-speed fixed-wing drones and one multi-copter—at varying ranges and altitudes. A central command-and-control center managed the operation, coordinating with radars and communication links for real-time targeting.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra Vision
The successful test strengthens Mission Sudarshan Chakra, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted in his Independence Day address. The mission envisions by 2035 a nationwide protective shield integrating missiles, lasers, radars, sensors, and cyber systems to form a comprehensive defence network.
Path Toward Atmanirbhar Defence
Future plans include integration with longer-range interceptors under Project Kusha and networking with Air Force and Army command systems. DRDO aims to involve both public and private industries in scaling production and innovation. The initiative aligns with India’s goal of building a self-reliant defence ecosystem.
