DRDO Successfully Tests Indigenous Oxygen System for LCA Tejas

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted high-altitude trials of the Indigenous Integrated Life Support System (ILSS) for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. This technological advancement is a major step in India’s efforts toward self-reliance in aerospace defense and will significantly improve pilot safety during high-altitude missions.

Indigenous On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS)

The ILSS features an advanced On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS), which provides a continuous supply of oxygen to pilots during flight. Unlike traditional liquid oxygen cylinders, which require frequent refilling and logistical support, the OBOGS generates oxygen in real-time using bleed air from the aircraft’s engine. This reduces operational constraints and enhances mission readiness.

High-Altitude Trials and Performance Evaluation

The high-altitude trials for the ILSS were conducted on the LCA Tejas under various extreme conditions, including altitudes up to 50,000 feet and high-G maneuvers. These tests assessed critical parameters such as oxygen concentration levels, demand-based breathing efficiency, and the availability of 100% oxygen during combat scenarios. Additionally, the functionality of the Anti-G valve was evaluated to ensure optimal pilot endurance during high-speed maneuvers.

The system demonstrated seamless integration and performance, meeting all required aeromedical and safety standards. With this successful evaluation, the ILSS is now set to enhance the operational effectiveness of LCA Tejas pilots, ensuring a reliable life support mechanism in complex flight conditions.

Indigenous Development and Future Applications

The ILSS has been developed with 90% indigenous components, showcasing India’s commitment to self-sufficiency in defense technology. Manufactured with the support of industry partners, this system represents a strong collaboration between research institutions and the defense sector.

Beyond its deployment in the LCA Tejas, the ILSS has the potential for adaptation in other aircraft platforms, including those used by the Indian Air Force and Navy. Its versatility makes it a valuable addition to India’s growing defense aviation capabilities.
