DRDO Successfully Tests Advanced VSHORADS Missile System

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted three flight tests of the advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile at the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges in Rajasthan on October 3 and 4, 2024. The tests showcased the missile’s exceptional capabilities against high-speed targets, proving its performance in diverse engagement scenarios, including approaching, receding, and crossing modes.

Key Milestone for Indigenous Defence Technology

The VSHORADS, a fourth-generation, miniaturised Man Portable Air Defence System, has been developed indigenously by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and industry partners. The successful completion of these development trials marks a critical step towards the missile’s integration into the Indian Armed Forces, which have been closely involved with the project since its inception.

Demonstrating Advanced Capabilities

The flight tests highlighted the VSHORADS’ hit-to-kill capability, achieving maximum range and altitude interception against high-speed aerial targets. The trials were conducted using missiles manufactured through the Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) mode, paving the way for early User trials and mass production in line with the government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

Boost to India’s Defence Readiness

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO, Armed Forces, and industry partners for the successful testing. He noted that the modern technologies embedded in the VSHORADS would significantly enhance the Armed Forces’ operational capability against aerial threats.

Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also congratulated the team for the achievement, stating that the missile’s success would contribute greatly to India’s defence self-reliance.

The VSHORADS system, designed to counter threats from low-altitude aerial platforms, is set to provide a robust boost to the country’s short-range air defence capability, ensuring readiness and tactical superiority in future combat scenarios.
