DRDO Successfully Tests 120 km Pinaka Guided Rocket
The Defence Research and Development Organisation has successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket with a strike range of 120 km, marking a major milestone in India’s rocket artillery capability. The test was carried out on December 29 at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, and met all mission objectives.
Test Outcome and Performance
According to officials, the rocket was fired to its full designed range of 120 km and demonstrated all planned in-flight manoeuvres. The system accurately struck the designated target with high precision, validating the guidance, navigation, and control systems. The launch was conducted from an in-service Pinaka launcher, confirming compatibility with existing artillery platforms used by the Indian Army.
Development and Indigenous Content
The long-range guided rocket has been developed indigenously by DRDO laboratories, including the Armament Research and Development Establishment, with support from other specialised research centres. The successful test highlights advancements in precision strike technology, propulsion, and guidance systems, and reinforces India’s focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Strategic Significance
The extended range and improved accuracy of the Pinaka system significantly enhance the Indian Army’s deep-strike and area-denial capabilities. The development is expected to strengthen operational flexibility along India’s borders and reduce dependence on imported long-range artillery systems. Officials indicated that the successful trial clears the way for further user evaluations and eventual induction into service.
