DRDO Offers 28 Indigenous Weapons for Emergency Procurement
In a major push towards defence self-reliance, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has submitted a list of 28 indigenous weapon systems to the Ministry of Defence for acquisition under the emergency procurement route. This initiative aims to expedite the equipping of Indian armed forces with homegrown capabilities in light of evolving security challenges.
The proposal includes a wide range of advanced systems such as missile platforms, loitering munitions, electronic warfare solutions, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), armoured vehicles, artillery systems, and short to medium-range air defence assets. These systems are designed, developed, and tested by DRDO and its affiliated labs and have already demonstrated readiness for deployment.
Rapid Acquisition for Modern Battlefield Needs
Emergency procurement enables faster acquisition by significantly reducing procedural delays. Unlike conventional procurement processes that may span years, emergency procurement can compress timelines to mere months. This flexibility becomes crucial as India continues to address threats along its borders and prepares for a range of hybrid and conventional warfare scenarios.
The DRDO’s weapon lineup is expected to close capability gaps in surveillance, force protection, firepower, and mobility. For instance, UAVs can offer real-time situational awareness, while loitering munitions can strike high-value targets with precision. Mobile EW platforms will be crucial for disrupting enemy communications and radar tracking.
Atmanirbhar Bharat in Action
The offer is also a strategic reinforcement of the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming to reduce India’s reliance on foreign arms imports. Indigenous manufacturing is expected to get a significant boost as DRDO works in tandem with private firms and public sector units to produce these systems at scale. Several of these weapons are already in various stages of user trials and are ready for production ramp-up upon approval.
Enhancing Frontline Readiness
The systems proposed for emergency procurement are particularly suited for rapid induction in forward areas, including high-altitude terrains and conflict-prone zones. Troop mobility, counter-UAV capabilities, and tactical missile defence are among the most urgent needs addressed by this offering.
This move is expected to strengthen India’s strategic preparedness while providing its soldiers with technologically advanced, battle-tested systems that match or surpass foreign counterparts in quality and reliability.
