Doval Meets Wang Yi in Beijing, Urges Joint Fight Against Terrorism

India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on June 23, delivering a firm message on the urgent need for coordinated action against terrorism. The interaction came against the backdrop of escalating regional conflict and was part of the 20th SCO Security Council Secretaries’ meeting.

In the discussions, NSA Doval highlighted the imperative to counter terrorism “in all its forms and manifestations”, referencing recent attacks like the Pahalgam incident that sparked cross-border military escalation between India and Pakistan. This was widely interpreted as a subtle reminder to China to press Pakistan to crack down on terror infrastructure on its soil.

The two officials also reviewed the current state of India–China bilateral ties, focusing on enhancing diplomatic dialogue and promoting people-to-people engagement. Wang reiterated China’s commitment to improving communication, managing sensitive border issues, and maintaining peace and stability—summarised poignantly as two “majestic civilizations dancing together,” per the Chinese envoy.

Key Focus Areas

  • Fight against terrorism, with Doval pressing for stronger collaboration across borders to dismantle terror networks.
  • Revival of bilateral engagement, emphasising incremental trust-building and frequent diplomatic exchanges.
  • Upcoming SR Talks, as Doval invited Wang to India for the 24th round of Special Representative boundary discussions at a mutually convenient time.

This marked Doval’s second visit to China in less than a year, following a December meeting that yielded several confidence-building pacts on border transits and cultural exchanges. The current meeting is seen as reinforcing India’s commitment to dialogue-based diplomacy, balancing firmness on national security with an openness to partnership.
