Donald Trump Criticizes India’s High Tariffs, Vows Reciprocal Tax if Re-elected
Washington, D.C.: Former U.S. President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took a swipe at India, alleging that it imposes the highest tariffs among major countries on foreign products.
During a speech in Detroit, Trump vowed to implement a reciprocal tax if he is elected as the next U.S. President, targeting countries with high tariff rates.
Addressing his supporters at a campaign event, Trump said, “Perhaps the most important element of my plan to make America extraordinarily wealthy again is reciprocity. It’s a word that’s very important in my plan because we generally don’t charge tariffs.”
The former President elaborated that while the U.S. refrains from imposing significant tariffs, other countries, including India, impose high duties on American products, making it challenging for U.S. businesses to compete.
India and Tariff Policies Under Fire
Trump singled out India as “the biggest tariff charger of all,” and claimed that while he had a positive relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s high tariff rates have been a longstanding issue in trade relations between the two nations.
“India is a very big charger. We have a great relationship with India. I did. And especially the leader, Modi. He’s a great leader. Great man. Really is a great man. He’s brought it together. He’s done a great job. But they probably charge as much,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for America to respond in kind.
Trump also pointed to other countries like China and Brazil, accusing them of imposing steep tariffs on U.S. goods. He alleged that China levies tariffs as high as 200% on certain products, which, he stated, hurts American businesses and the economy.
Promise of a Reciprocal Tax
In his speech, Trump proposed a strategy to introduce a “reciprocal tax” that would impose the same tariffs on foreign countries as they do on American goods. This, he argued, would level the playing field for U.S. companies and generate significant revenue for the country.
Trump’s comments come as he continues to campaign on a platform that emphasizes American economic strength, focusing on renegotiating trade deals and reducing trade deficits. His criticism of India’s trade policies is likely to resonate with his base, which has long supported his stance on promoting fair trade practices and reducing economic disparities with other nations.
