Doha Named GCC Tourism Capital for 2026
Doha has been officially selected as the Gulf Cooperation Council’s Tourism Capital for 2026, marking a major regional recognition for Qatar’s tourism strategy and infrastructure. The designation was announced following consultations among tourism authorities of GCC member states, who assessed candidate cities on parameters such as cultural offerings, visitor infrastructure, sustainability, and long-term tourism planning.
Recognition of Infrastructure and Culture
Officials noted that Doha’s modern transport systems, including its international airport and metro network, along with its hospitality capacity, played a key role in the selection. The city’s museums, heritage districts, waterfront developments, and cultural events were also highlighted as factors that enhance its appeal to regional and international visitors. Doha’s ability to blend modern urban development with cultural identity was cited as a distinguishing feature.
Plans for 2026 Tourism Year
As GCC Tourism Capital, Doha is expected to host a series of tourism-focused events throughout 2026. These will include cultural festivals, exhibitions, business tourism initiatives, and joint GCC promotional campaigns aimed at encouraging multi-destination travel within the region. Authorities expect the designation to further strengthen tourism cooperation among Gulf countries.
Boost to Qatar’s Tourism Sector
The announcement comes amid continued growth in visitor arrivals to Qatar in recent years. The 2026 title is expected to enhance Doha’s global visibility, attract new investment in tourism-related sectors, and support Qatar’s broader economic diversification goals beyond energy.
