DMK Seals DMDK Pact, MNM Backs Out
The DMK has sealed a seat-sharing pact with the DMDK for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, allotting it 10 seats and making it one of the larger allies in the ruling party’s front. At the same time, Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam has decided to stay out of the electoral contest while extending support to the DMK alliance from outside.
DMK Finalises DMDK Seat-Sharing Pact
The agreement gives the DMDK 10 seats in the DMK-led alliance for the upcoming Assembly election. With this, the Vijayakanth-founded party becomes the third-largest ally in the coalition after Congress. DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth said the party had initially sought more seats but agreed to compromise as part of the alliance arrangement.
Kamal Haasan’s MNM Stays Out Of Poll Contest
Kamal Haasan announced that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, will not contest the election. He said the number of seats offered by the DMK and the proposal that MNM candidates contest under the DMK’s rising sun symbol were not acceptable. Despite that, he said his party would extend unconditional outside support to the DMK-led front.
Tamil Nadu Alliance Politics Gains Momentum
The twin developments mark an important step in the shaping of the Tamil Nadu election battlefield. While the DMK has strengthened its alliance by bringing in DMDK with a formal seat pact, it has also secured political backing from Kamal Haasan without having to accommodate MNM within the actual contest structure. The moves are likely to influence opposition calculations as alliance-building accelerates ahead of the polls.\
