DK Shivakumar Meets Kharge Amid Leadership Speculation

Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, D K Shivakumar, met with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Delhi on November 16, 2025, in the midst of growing speculation about a possible change in state leadership. The meeting reportedly focused on internal party dynamics in the state and discussions over future roles.

Leadership Debate Intensifies

Sources say Shivakumar raised the matter of leadership change in the Karnataka Congress unit during his discussion with Kharge. However, Kharge reportedly directed him to speak with senior party leader Rahul Gandhi for any decision in this regard. Shivakumar later clarified that his trip was primarily to finalise dates for laying foundation stones for new party offices and insisted there was no intention to step down or demand leadership change.

Political Reaction in Karnataka

The meeting comes against the backdrop of rumours that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah may be replaced or that the Cabinet could be reshuffled after the recent Bihar elections. Shivakumar dismissed suggestions that he was plotting a takeover, calling himself a “disciplined soldier” of the party. Party insiders suggest the final decision on any change will rest with Congress high command.

What It Means

While no official announcement has been made, the meeting underscores the simmering internal debate within the Karnataka Congress unit. With foundational work on new party offices underway, the leadership-question may now shift to whether structural change or reaffirmation of existing roles is the preferred outcome.
