Diwali Added To UNESCO Heritage List

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, has been officially included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was announced during the committee session held in New Delhi, where representatives agreed that the festival carries deep cultural value and is celebrated across communities and nations.

Significance Of The Recognition

The listing acknowledges Diwali’s cultural symbolism, which centres on the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival has long been observed through lights, decorations, prayers, and family gatherings. The recognition highlights the shared values of harmony, renewal and togetherness that form the heart of the celebration.

Growing Indian Presence On Heritage List

With this addition, India now has sixteen cultural elements recognised by UNESCO. Earlier entries include yoga, Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, Garba, and Ramlila. Officials described the latest inclusion as an important milestone that reflects the country’s diversity and heritage conservation efforts.

Reactions Across The Country

Cultural organisations and government representatives welcomed the announcement, calling it a proud moment for India. They said the honour brings responsibility to preserve the traditions associated with the festival and promote inclusive celebrations for future generations.
