Dileep Acquitted In 2017 Kerala Assault Case
A sessions court in Ernakulam has acquitted Malayalam actor Dileep in the 2017 abduction and sexual assault case. The verdict was delivered after a long trial that lasted nearly eight years. Six other accused were found guilty.
The case had been one of the most closely watched legal battles in Kerala’s film industry.
Court Says Evidence Was Not Sufficient
The judge ruled that the prosecution could not prove that Dileep had conspired or played a role in the crime. Charges of conspiracy, abduction, gang rape and destruction of evidence against him were dismissed.
However, the court convicted six other accused, including prime accused Pulsar Suni. They were held guilty of offences including kidnapping and sexual assault. Sentencing will take place later this week.
Reaction From Dileep And Impact On Industry
Dileep issued a short statement after the verdict, thanking his family, lawyers and supporters. He said he had waited many years to clear his name.
The case had led to strong public reactions and discussions about safety and power in the film industry. Many actors and organisations had earlier voiced support for the survivor and demanded a fair investigation.
Debate Expected To Continue
The ruling is expected to restart discussions on how sexual assault cases are handled in the legal system, especially when celebrities are involved. Women’s groups said they would continue to advocate for reforms and better protection for survivors.
The case had remained in the public spotlight for years, with multiple twists, witness changes and court hearings.
