Digital Addiction Flagged as Public Health Concern
India’s Economic Survey 2025–26 has flagged digital addiction as a growing public health issue, especially among children and young adults. The survey noted that excessive use of smartphones, social media, gaming platforms and online content is increasingly linked to mental stress, sleep disruption, reduced attention span and declining academic performance.
Call to Limit Children’s Online Access
The survey suggested exploring age-appropriate restrictions on digital access, particularly for children. It recommended stronger age-verification mechanisms by online platforms and greater parental supervision to prevent early and excessive exposure to digital devices.
Schools and Communities Given Key Role
The report stressed the need for digital wellness education in schools to promote healthy screen habits. It also encouraged communities to create more opportunities for physical activity, social interaction and offline engagement to counterbalance screen dependence.
Mental Health Risks Highlighted
According to the survey, unchecked digital addiction may increase risks of anxiety, depression and social isolation among youth. It called for expanding mental health support systems and promoting awareness about responsible digital usage as device penetration continues to rise across India.
