DGCA Seeks Explanation From Air India Over Dreamliner Operations

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show-cause notice to Air India seeking an explanation for operating a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner despite repeated technical snags. The notice, sent this week, raises concerns about safety and compliance after the aircraft, registered VT-ANI, was flown on scheduled services despite known maintenance issues.

Safety concerns and flagged issues

In its notice, the DGCA flagged concerns including possible non-compliance with the Minimum Equipment List (MEL), a set of standards that determine when an aircraft can safely operate with certain equipment inoperative. The regulator has also questioned decisions related to aircraft dispatch and crew actions during operations of flights that include long-haul services such as those between Delhi and Tokyo. The notice indicates that the aircraft was accepted for service even when some systems had reported degradations.

Air India response and next steps

Air India has acknowledged the situation and said it regrets any inconvenience caused. The airline stated that the affected Dreamliner is undergoing necessary checks and that safety remains its top priority. It said it will respond to the DGCA notice within the stipulated timeframe. Meanwhile, the regulator will review the airline’s explanation before deciding on any further regulatory action.

Aviation safety context

The DGCA’s action comes amid heightened scrutiny of airline operations and safety practices in India’s civil aviation sector. Regulators and airlines are under pressure to ensure strict adherence to maintenance standards and operational protocols to safeguard passengers and crew.
