Denmark PM Warns US Against Attacks on NATO Allies
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a strong warning on Monday in response to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump about the strategic Arctic territory of Greenland, which is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Frederiksen said that any military action by the United States against Greenland or another NATO member would have severe consequences for the transatlantic alliance and longstanding security cooperation.
Sovereignty and NATO Principles Emphasised
Frederiksen stressed that Greenland’s future and territorial integrity are matters for Denmark and the people of Greenland to decide. She said that any attempt to use force against a NATO ally would be unacceptable under international law and would undermine the collective defence framework that has existed since the end of the Second World War. Her remarks reflect deep concern in Copenhagen about recent suggestions by Trump that the United States might pursue control of Greenland for strategic defence reasons.
European Support for Denmark
European leaders have rallied behind Denmark’s position, with several countries affirming their support for Danish sovereignty and the importance of respecting territorial integrity.
