Denmark Flags Fundamental Disagreement With US On Greenland
Denmark has said a “fundamental disagreement” remains with the United States following talks at the White House on the future of Greenland. Danish officials said discussions with senior US leaders did not resolve differences over Washington’s views on Greenland’s strategic role and governance.
Denmark Reasserts Position
Copenhagen reiterated that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that its status can only be decided by the people of Greenland. Danish leaders stressed that any discussion on security or cooperation in the Arctic must respect sovereignty and self-determination.
Security Concerns Acknowledged
Both sides recognised the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region amid rising global competition. Denmark said it is open to cooperation with the United States on defence and security matters related to Greenland, but ruled out any change in control or ownership.
Talks To Continue
Despite the disagreement, Denmark and the United States agreed to continue dialogue through diplomatic channels to address shared security interests. Danish officials said further discussions would focus on practical cooperation rather than political demands.
The issue of Greenland has resurfaced periodically in US-Denmark relations, reflecting broader geopolitical shifts in the Arctic region.
