Denmark Flags Decisive Moment in Greenland Dispute
Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said the country is facing a decisive moment over Greenland, following renewed comments by US President Donald Trump on Washington’s interest in the Arctic territory. Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Frederiksen said the issue goes beyond bilateral relations and touches on international law, sovereignty, and the right of Greenland’s people to decide their own future. She stressed that Greenland is not for sale and that any discussion about its status must involve the consent of its population.
European Backing and Greenland’s Stand
Several European leaders have voiced support for Denmark, underlining that changes to Greenland’s status cannot be imposed externally. They warned that pressure on the issue could strain alliances and undermine established international norms.
Greenland’s political leadership has also reiterated that the island’s future will be determined by its residents alone, rejecting outside attempts to influence its governance or ownership.
Strategic Context
The renewed focus on Greenland reflects growing global interest in the Arctic, driven by security concerns, climate change, and access to critical minerals. Danish officials say dialogue with allies will continue, but Denmark’s position on Greenland’s sovereignty remains firm.
