Democrats Win Both Houses in US Midterm Elections

Democrats have won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, securing major victories in traditionally Republican states. The results represent a significant political setback for President Donald Trump, whose party entered the elections controlling the White House, Senate and House of Representatives. Several closely watched Senate and gubernatorial contests also produced historic outcomes.

Democrats Flip Key Republican Senate Seats

Democrats secured Senate victories in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina, overcoming Republican advantages in several states.

James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, while Adam Hamilton unseated incumbent Roger Marshall in Kansas.

In Ohio, former Senator Sherrod Brown defeated Republican Jon Husted. Democrat Annie Andrews also secured a notable victory in South Carolina.

Roy Cooper won North Carolina’s Senate contest, while Josh Turek defeated Republican Ashley Hinson in Iowa.

These results helped Democrats secure the 51 seats needed for an outright Senate majority.

Democratic Governors Win Historic Victories

Democrats also made gains in gubernatorial elections.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia’s governorship, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state.

In Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, becoming the state’s first female governor.

Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott in Texas, while Rob Sand secured a Democratic victory in Iowa.

Trump Faces Divided Government After Republican Losses

Democrats also secured control of the House of Representatives after gaining seats in competitive congressional districts.

The results will significantly alter the balance of power in Washington when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.

Democratic control of Congress will expand the opposition’s ability to conduct investigations, influence federal spending and challenge administration policies.

Trump has indicated that he will accept the election results and expressed willingness to cooperate with Democratic lawmakers.
