Delhi’s AAP and BJP Clash Over Alleged Power Outages
In a recent development, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have engaged in a dispute over reported power outages in various parts of Delhi. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi has raised concerns about prolonged electricity cuts affecting residents across multiple areas.
AAP’s Allegations of Power Supply Failures
Atishi highlighted that over the past three days, several neighborhoods in Delhi have experienced significant power interruptions. She pointed to numerous complaints on social media, citing specific instances:

On February 9, Sainik Enclave faced a four-hour outage.

Sunlight Colony 2 endured an all-night blackout on February 8.

Radheypuri, Vikaspuri KG-2, and Anand Parbat also suffered extended power cuts.
Atishi emphasized that these issues emerged immediately after the AAP government was removed from power. She stated, “For the past three days different parts of Delhi have been experiencing prolonged power cuts.” She further alleged that the BJP, following its recent electoral victory, took swift control by locking ministers’ offices, restricting staff access, and halting file movements from February 8. Atishi remarked, “Delhi is already seeing the consequences of BJP rule.”
BJP’s Response to Power Outage Claims
In response, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva refuted Atishi’s allegations, accusing her of disseminating false information. He commented, “For years, the Kejriwal government, in collusion with discoms, exploited consumers. Now, fearing a BJP government, Atishi is creating panic.” Sachdeva suggested that the AAP is attempting to incite unnecessary concern among residents in light of the BJP’s recent electoral success.
Power Distribution Companies’ Clarification
Power distribution companies (discoms) addressed the reported outages, clarifying that these instances were related to routine maintenance activities conducted during periods of low power consumption. A discom official, speaking anonymously, stated, “These are instances related to routine maintenance practices undertaken during lean power consumption period.” This explanation suggests that the outages were planned and necessary for infrastructure upkeep.
Residents’ Experiences with Power Supply
Feedback from Delhi residents has been mixed. Atul Goyal, a resident of Karol Bagh’s Western Extension Area and president of Urja, an umbrella body of resident welfare associations in Delhi, reported a three-hour power outage on February 11, which he discovered was due to scheduled maintenance for electric cable installation. However, many other residents across the city reported no significant power issues recently.
This exchange between AAP and BJP underscores the ongoing political tensions in Delhi, with each party attributing the power supply issues to the other’s actions. As the situation develops, residents remain attentive to the reliability of essential services and the political narratives surrounding them.
