Delhi Under Yellow Alert as IMD Warns of Intensifying Monsoon Showers

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi today, cautioning residents about intensifying monsoon activity and the likelihood of isolated heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. The alert signals potentially disruptive weather conditions across the capital, especially in the afternoon and early evening hours.

Delhi rains

The day began under mostly sunny skies with high humidity, but meteorological data suggests that thunderstorm activity is likely to increase between 3 PM and 5 PM. The IMD has warned of brief but intense showers that could impact daily commuting and result in waterlogging in low-lying areas. With temperatures hovering around 32–33°C during the afternoon, the combination of heat and rainfall is expected to produce an uncomfortable, sticky atmosphere.

As the evening progresses, skies are predicted to clear slightly, but humidity will remain high. Nighttime temperatures will offer some relief, dipping to around 28–29°C, though the air is expected to stay moist and heavy.

IMD alert

In its advisory, the IMD has recommended that residents stay indoors during storm hours, avoid exposed electrical equipment, and refrain from venturing into flood-prone areas. Commuters are urged to carry rain gear and plan for potential delays due to traffic snarls during peak rainfall periods. The department emphasized that today’s yellow alert is a precursor to more significant monsoon developments in the coming days.

Authorities are also on standby, with civic agencies preparing to manage any fallout from sudden downpours. Public advisories will be issued if the situation escalates further.

Monsoon showers

Looking ahead, the IMD has indicated that Delhi will see a more active monsoon phase in the next few days, with widespread rain events and possible cloudbursts in surrounding regions. This pattern may contribute to cooler temperatures but will also bring heightened risks of flooding, power outages, and infrastructure stress.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official forecasts closely and take precautionary measures to avoid disruptions. The deepening monsoon surge could define the coming week’s weather outlook, making preparedness key to managing its impact on daily life.
