Delhi Sees Temporary Relief as Air Quality Improves

Delhi witnessed a brief improvement in air quality on Thursday, with the overall Air Quality Index recorded at around 220, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. This marked a notable respite from the severe pollution levels seen earlier in the week, when AQI readings in several parts of the city had crossed the severe threshold.

Uneven Improvement Across City

While the overall air quality showed signs of recovery, pollution levels varied across different areas. Some monitoring stations continued to report readings in the ‘very poor’ category, indicating that the improvement was not uniform. Residents in certain localities still experienced hazy conditions and reduced visibility.

Weather Conditions Play a Role

Officials attributed the drop in pollution levels to favourable meteorological conditions, including stronger winds that helped disperse accumulated pollutants. Experts cautioned that such improvements are often short-lived during winter, as calm winds and lower temperatures can quickly lead to a buildup of pollutants again.

Health Advisory Remains

Despite the improvement, health authorities continued to advise vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exposure. Prolonged exposure to poor air quality can still pose health risks, even when conditions improve from severe levels.

Pollution Control Measures Continue

Authorities said air pollution control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan remain in place and will be adjusted depending on further changes in air quality. Monitoring agencies continue to track pollution trends closely to prevent a sharp deterioration in the coming days.
