Delhi Records Very Poor Air Quality Amid Cold Spell

Delhi continued to grapple with very poor air quality on January 16, 2026, with the Air Quality Index remaining in the very poor category across several monitoring stations. High concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants were recorded, making the air unhealthy, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.

Weather Worsens Pollution

Cold weather conditions and low wind speeds contributed to the persistence of pollution. Shallow fog and calm atmospheric conditions limited the dispersion of pollutants, allowing particulate matter to accumulate close to the surface. Meteorological agencies said these conditions are typical during winter and often lead to prolonged pollution episodes in the National Capital Region.

Health Advisory In Place

Authorities advised residents to limit outdoor activities, especially during early morning and late evening hours. People with existing health issues were urged to take extra precautions, including the use of masks and indoor air filtration where possible.

Outlook

Officials said air quality could improve slightly if wind speed increases, but warned that cold and stable weather conditions may continue to keep pollution levels elevated in the short term.
